What is an order deviation?

An order deviation occurs when an issue prevents the order from being picked as normal. Order deviations are also called order issues.

If a picker identifies a problem while retrieving items, such as missing stock, incorrect products, or damaged goods, the order must be flagged as deviated. This ensures the order is not packed or shipped until the issue has been resolved.

Common causes for order deviations

Deviations are typically caused by inventory issues. Common examples include:

  • Incorrect stock quantity during storing
    • Items are counted incorrectly when stored. Often happens when using manual entry of numbers in the Pio app instead of scanning items into the system.
  • Wrong product stored
    • SKU is selected manually from searching instead of scanning the barcode. Similar products can easily confuse manual selection.
  • Damaged goods
    • Items leaking or damaging other products within the bin.
  • Inventory not updated
    • Items are removed from a bin compartment without adjusting quantities in the system. For example, for temporary borrowing, the quantity in the bin isn't updated directly in the Search.

Deviation categories

There are currently three categories for flagging issues or reporting order deviations:

  • Missing item due to incorrect stock quantities
  • Damaged items
  • Wrong product, size, or color in the bin

How to report an issue during picking

During picking, you may encounter situations where the order cannot be fulfilled due to issues in the bins. Follow the steps below to flag the issue and report the order deviation.

  1. On the picking screen, use the three dots icon in the top menu to select 'Report issue'.
  2. Choose the appropriate issue category and add a comment with details on the issue (highly recommended). This will make it easier for the warehouse manager to resolve the issue later. Select 'Next' to continue.

  3. Specify how many items were successfully picked for the order. Select zero (0) if no matching SKU could be picked.

Leave any damaged or incorrect items in the bin or shelf you are reporting. This will automatically create a bin deviation for follow-up. When reporting missing items, any inventory left in the bin compartment will be removed.

  4. After clicking Confirm, the Complete screen will display which items were successfully picked and clearly indicate any items flagged with a deviation.

The order is now flagged as Deviated, and is not fulfilled. Leave the order in the deviation area (a designated shelf or box in the workstation area) so it is easy for the Warehouse Manager to find it when working on order issues.
