Sometimes, you may need to split orders and ship only the items that are in stock.

In Pio, this is done using partial shipments (also called order splitting).

The order splitting can be handled manually when needed, or you can enable the partial shipment setting to always split the orders when some items are out of stock.

Partial shipments settings

Navigate to Pio Admin > Orders > Partial shipments. The partial shipment setting is per order channel. If you have multiple stores connected to your Pio app, you can enable/disable partial shipments per store:

How the order splitting works

When partial shipment is enabled, orders are automatically split into multiple fulfillments when at least one item is in stock and at least one item is out of stock. The fulfillment with available stock will be automatically queued for picking.

If you need to split orders more than once, this must be done manually.

The split orders are labelled in the order overview as ‘Partially fulfilled’ orders:

In the order details of a ‘Partially fulfilled’ order, the fulfilled and unfulfilled items will be listed in two separate sections:

Different ways to complete partial shipments

In the example from the screenshot above, three items were already in stock and three items were out of stock. The order channel is set up with "Partial shipments", so the order was automatically split into into multiple shipments.

The first fulfillment was picked and items were shipped to the customer. Three items are still out of stock and not fulfillable. The order status is now "Partially fulfilled".

When you get one or more items back in stock, there are two scenarios of what happens next

Scenario 1 - All remaining items are back in stock

All of the missing items, comes back in stock one week later at the same time. In this case, the unfilled items will go automatically to picking in Pio app and no extra steps are required.

Scenario 2: Only some items are back

Only one or two of the items comes back in stock one week later, the last item is still missing. If you want to ship the items in stock now, you can manually queue available items to be fulfilled. This will split the order once more, and leave the out of stock item as unfulfillable.

This second order splitting has to be done manually. Pio will normally wait for the last missing product to come back in stock, and then it will automatically send the remaining items to picking.

Multiple shipments for one order

If you want to pick and send the available items in stock now, and have three different shipments for the same order, select 'Queue all items in stock':

When this is done, a new fulfillment for the products in stock is created:

When the last items are available in stock, the fulfillment will go automatically to picking.
